1 O LORD, in your strength the king rejoices, and in your salvation how greatly he exults! 2 You have given him his heart’s desire and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah 3 For you meet him with rich blessings; you set a crown of fine gold upon his head. 4 He asked life of you; you gave it to him, length of days forever and ever. 5 His glory is great through your salvation; splendor and majesty you bestow on him. 6 For you make him most blessed forever; you make him glad with the joy of your presence. 7 For the king trusts in the LORD, and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved. 8 Your hand will find out all your enemies; your right hand will find out those who hate you. 9 You will make them as a blazing oven when you appear. The LORD will swallow them up in his wrath, and fire will consume them. 10 You will destroy their descendants from the earth, and their offspring from among the children of man. 11 Though they plan evil against you, though they devise mischief, they will not succeed. 12 For you will put them to flight; you will aim at their faces with your bows. 13 Be exalted, O LORD, in your strength! \u201cIn this it is shown that the safety and prosperity of the king ought to produce public and general rejoicing through the whole realm, in as much as God by this means intended to preserve the whole body in safety. But, above all, it was the design of the Holy Spirit here to direct the minds of the faithful to Christ, who was the end and perfection of this kingdom, and to teach them that they could not be saved except under the head which God himself had appointed over them.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(v. 1)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was David\u2019s intention to testify not only that it was God who elevated him to the throne, but also that whatever blessings God had conferred upon him redounded to the public good, and the advantage of all the faithful.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(v. 2)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the second verse there is pointed out the cause of this joy. The cause was this: that God had heard the prayers of the king, and had liberally granted him whatever he desired.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(v. 3)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe Psalmist makes express mention of the crown, because it was the emblem and ensign of royalty; and he intimates by this that God would be the guardian of the king, whom he himself had created.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/b>\u201cIn the first clause, the king is called an avenger; in the second, this office is transferred to God; and in the third, the execution of the vengeance is attributed to fire; which three things very well agree.<\/span><\/b> We know that judgment has been committed to Christ, that he may cast his enemies headlong into everlasting fire; but, it was of importance distinctly to express that this is not the judgment of man but of God.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(v. 4-6)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThe same has been exemplified in Christ, who, from contempt, ignominy, death, the grave, and despair, was raised up by his Father to the sovereignty of heaven, to sit at the Father\u2019s right hand for ever, and at length to be the judge of the world.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(v. 7)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is here made a promise, common to all the people of God, which may serve to keep us tranquil amidst the various storms which agitate the world. The world turns round as it were upon a wheel, by which it comes to pass, that those who were raised to the very top are precipitated to the bottom in a moment; but it is here promised, that the kingdom of Judah, and the kingdom of Christ of which it was a type, will be exempted from such vicissitude.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(v. 8)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cHitherto the internal happiness of the kingdom has been described. Now there follows, as it was necessary there should, the celebration of its invincible strength against its enemies.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThis particularly applies to the kingdom of Christ, which is never without enemies in this world.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(v. 9)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThey may burn with rage against the Church, and set the world on fire by their cruelty, but when their wickedness shall have reached its highest pitch, there is this reward which God has in reserve for them, that he will cast them into his burning furnace to consume them.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThe psalm is at length concluded with a prayer, which again confirms that the kingdom which is spoken of is so connected with the glory of God, that his power is reflected from it.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/b>Heavenly Father gave all authority to salvation and judgment of man to His Son, Jesus Christ. But the world constantly intends to harm Jesus and His church. But the kingdom of Christ, which is symbolized by David’s kingdom, has no ups and downs like the nations of the world. It is a kingdom to be built forever. To this end, all those who oppose the kingdom of Christ will be finally judged by fire. But those, who are saved by grace of Christ, will receive eternal salvation.<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
