From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears. 7 Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations also of the mountains trembled and quaked, because he was angry. 8 Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him. 9 He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet. 10 He rode on a cherub and flew; he came swiftly on the wings of the wind. 11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him, thick clouds dark with water. 12 Out of the brightness before him hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds. 13 The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Most High uttered his voice, hailstones and coals of fire. 14 And he sent out his arrows and scattered them; he flashed forth lightnings and routed them. 15 Then the channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations of the world were laid bare at your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils. 16 He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. 17 He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support. 19 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 4-6)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cDavid was forsaken and abandoned in the world, and all men shut their ears to his cry for help, God stretched forth his hand from heaven to save him.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 7)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cSuch sudden and unforeseen changes manifest more clearly the presence of the great Author of nature.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 8-9)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd when God, by his very breath, covers the heaven with clouds, and taking away from us the brightness of the sun and of all the stars, overwhelms us in darkness, by this we are very impressively taught how dreadful is his wrath.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 11)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cwhen God covers the air with dark clouds, it is as if he spread a thick veil between him and men, to deprive them of the sight of his countenance.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 13)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThe import of his words is, Whoever does not acknowledge that I have been preserved by the hand of God, may as well deny that it is God who thunders from heaven, and abolish his power which is manifested in the whole order of nature, and especially in those wonderful changes which we see taking place in the atmosphere.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 15)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201che beholds, as it were at a glance, or in an instant, both the ancient miracle of the drying up of the Red Sea, and the assistance which God granted to himself. In short, God, who once opened up for his people a way through the Red Sea, and then showed himself to be their protector upon this condition, that they should assure themselves of being always maintained and preserved under his keeping\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 16-17)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen God defends and preserves us wonderfully and by extraordinary means, he is said in Scripture language to send down succor from above; and this sending is set in opposition to human and earthly aids, on which we usually place a mistaken and an undue confidence.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 18-19)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThe point on which he principally insisted is, that the assaults which were made upon him, and the conflicts which he had to sustain, were stirred up against him for no other reason but because he had obeyed the call of God, and followed with humble obedience the revelation of his oracle.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cIn short, David testifies, by this expression, that the assistance of God had never failed him, because he had not thrust himself into the office of king of his own accord, but that when he was contented with his humble condition, and would willingly have lived in obscurity, in the sheep-cotes, or in his father\u2019s hut, he had been anointed by the hand of Samuel, which was the symbol of his free election by God to fill the throne.\u201d – John Calvin<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n
