\u201cIn the beginning David commends himself to the protection of God. He then meditates upon the benefits which he received from God, and thereby stirs himself up to thanksgiving. By his service, it is true, he could in no respect be profitable to God, but he, notwithstanding, surrenders and devotes himself entirely to him, protesting that he will have nothing to do with superstitions. He also states the reason of this to be, that full and substantial happiness consists in resting in God alone, who never suffers his own people to want any good thing.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 1)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cHe does not, however, here implore the aid of God, in some particular emergency, as he often does in other psalms, but he beseeches him to show himself his protector during the whole course of his life, and indeed our safety both in life and in death depends entirely upon our being under the protection of God.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 2)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThe import of his language is, I am, indeed, fully convinced in my heart, and know assuredly, that God can derive no profit or advantage from me; but notwithstanding this, I will join myself in fellowship with the saints, that with one accord we may worship him by the sacrifices of praise.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 3)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThis passage, therefore, teaches us that there is no sacrifice more acceptable to God than when we sincerely and heartily connect ourselves with the society of the righteous, and being knit together by the sacred bond of\u00a0<\/span><\/b>godliness, cultivate and maintain with them brotherly good-will. In this consists the communion of saints which separates them from the degrading pollutions of the world, that they may be the holy and peculiar people of God.”<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 4)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot be united into the one body of the Church under God, if we do not break off all the bonds of impiety, separate ourselves from idolaters, and keep ourselves pure and at a distance from all the pollutions which corrupt and vitiate the holy service of God.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 5)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cAll the superstitions which have ever prevailed in the world have undoubtedly proceeded from this source, that superstitious men have not been contented with possessing God alone. But we do not actually possess him unless \u201che is the portion of our inheritance;\u201d in other words, unless we are wholly devoted to him, so as no longer to have any desire unfaithfully to depart from him.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 6)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever, therefore, those things present themselves to us which would lead us away from resting in God alone, let us make use of this sentiment as an antidote against them, that we have sufficient cause for being contented, since he who has in himself an absolute fullness of all good has given himself to be enjoyed by us.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 7)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cLast of all, David confesses that it was entirely owing to the pure grace of God that he had come to possess so great a good, and that he had been made a partaker of it by faith.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 8)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cDavid then reckons himself secure against all dangers, and promises himself certain safety, because, with the eyes of faith, he beholds God as present with him.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 9)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThe principal, the essential part of a happy life, as we know, is to possess tranquillity of conscience and of mind; as, on the contrary, there is no greater infelicity than to be tossed amidst a multiplicity of cares and fears.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 10)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cAs to the point, that Peter (Acts 2:30) and Paul (Acts 13:33) contend that this prophecy was fulfilled in the person of Christ alone, the sense in which we must understand them is this, that he was wholly and perfectly exempted from the corruption of the grave, that he might call his members into his fellowship, and make them partakers of this blessing, although by degrees, and each according to his measure.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

(verse 11)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cIndeed, he only knows the way of life who is so united to God that he lives in God, and cannot live without him.\u201d -Calvin<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n
